DOE To Discuss New Report on Removing Spent Fuel From San Onofre At March 20 Community Engagement Panel Meeting
ROSEMEAD, Calif., March 13, 2025 — An in-depth report on the potential removal and transport options of spent nuclear fuel from the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station is the key topic at the next SONGS Community Engagement Panel public meeting. Experts from the U.S. Department of Energy and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratories will discuss progress of several initiatives managed by the Office of Storage and Transportation, including the package performance project, engagement with states and tribal nations on transportation routes, and the site-specific de-inventory report for SONGS, including conceptual transportation options and routes for spent fuel canisters once an offsite facility is available.
In addition, SCE will provide an update on the most recent inspection of two spent fuel canisters within the Holtec UMAX dry cask storage system, part of the company’s ongoing inspection and maintenance program. SCE will also discuss the latest findings from groundwater monitoring to assess tritium levels.
The virtual meeting will begin at 2:30 p.m. (PDT) via Microsoft Teams video conference. Members of the public can view the video conference by visiting SONGScommunity.com, where they will find a link to the Microsoft Teams meeting and can register to participate in an hourlong public comment period.
In June 2013, when SCE announced the retirement of San Onofre Units 2 and 3, SCE established the core principles of safety, stewardship and community engagement to guide the decommissioning.
