Emergency Preparedness at San Onofre to be Addressed at June 12 Community Engagement Panel Meeting

ROSEMEAD, Calif., June 5, 2025 — Emergency preparedness and offsite agency support for the decommissioned San Onofre nuclear power plant will be the focus of the next public meeting of the SONGS Community Engagement Panel. Officials from the Orange County Emergency Management Division, San Diego County Office of Emergency Services and Southern California Edison will review current response plans.

With the reactors retired and all spent nuclear fuel in a passive dry storage facility, there are no credible accident scenarios that would result in an offsite release of radiological material. Even with the lower risk profile, a robust emergency plan remains in place at San Onofre with support from state and local agencies.

In addition, SCE staff will provide an update on seismic safety and discuss environmental topics, including the latest findings from groundwater monitoring to assess tritium levels.

The virtual meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. (PDT) via Microsoft Teams video conference.
