Southern California Edison Refutes False Allegation that Personnel Not Trained in Cybersecurity

ROSEMEAD, Calif., Feb. 27, 2013 — Southern California Edison (SCE) is committed to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station and its employees at the nuclear station have been trained in many areas, including cybersecurity.

The Nuclear Energy Institute has industry guidelines for cybersecurity training at nuclear facilities for affected employees and San Onofre is in compliance with this requirement. SCE also has an annual corporate information security training requirement for all its employees and, like other employees throughout the company, the staff at San Onofre is in the process of completing this training.

Previously, San Onofre had a site-specific training requirement that duplicated or exceeded the requirements listed above. This training was later determined to be unnecessary.

The plant's unit 2 was taken out of service Jan. 9, 2012, for a planned outage. Unit 3 was safely taken off line Jan. 31, 2012, after station operators detected a small leak in a steam generator tube. Each unit will remain shut down until the NRC is satisfied that the unit is safe to operate.
